When Virginia approached me to take charge of the music for her wedding, from her song suggestions for each part of the day I was able to curate a playlist that both the Virginia, Chris and all their guests would love.
The Drinks Reception
Set in the beautiful courtyard of the Sun Street Hotel on a summer evening in August 2023, I was welcomed by the wonderful team to set up for Virginia and Chris’ drinks reception.
For this part of the day, Virginia said to me – “Vibe: relaxed summery continuous background music, not necessarily split into specific songs. A bit tropic-house / soft afternoon jazz style a bit like the vibe of Watermelon Sugar (Harry Styles).” So following the brief, I knew just what to do.
As guests gathered for their welcome drinks, the ambiance was set with a blend of mellow classics and timeless jazz tunes. From background music such as Jazz classic like ‘My Baby Just Cares For Me’ by Nina Simone and ‘Beyond the Sea’ by Bobby Darin and love classics like ‘Lover’ by Taylor Swift and ‘At Last’ by Etta James, this was the perfect vibe as guests were arriving. Set in a beautiful outside area at the Sun Street Hotel, Liverpool Street, the courtyard was a beautiful setting before guests went in for the wedding breakfast.
The Evening Party
After the wedding breakfast set inside, the evening shifted from chilled conversations to lively celebrations. This marked the beginning of the evening party, and I loved creating a party vibe for all the guests, once again outside in the courtyard of the hotel.
The brief for this part of the day – “Ramping up from earlier background music. A bit more lively, evening-y, people starting to dance a little bit. Followed by lively, fun wedding songs that everyone can sing and dance to.”
The dance floor came alive with a mix of dance classics, from disco beats like ‘I Will Survive’ by Gloria Gaynor and ‘Dancing Queen’ by ABBA to rock and roll favourites requested by the bride like ‘Johnny B. Good’ by Chuck Berry and ‘Great Balls Of Fire’ by Jerry Lee Lewis. The evening unfolded into a celebration of love, laughter, and music. The dance floor was never empty and remained a vibrant space and I even had the honour of staying longer ensuring that the party continued long into the night.
